The bathrooms all have this toilet that's in the ground, not quite sure what that's about. All the cultural differences are really interesting, they love Americans.. at least, what they know about Americans from the big screen. It's really quite different here, beyond the obvious translation barriers. Being a communication major, I feel like what they are trying for is more than just wanting to be an American, more than just chasing their idea of the "American dream". It goes far beyond people wanting to be whiter (yes, they sell soaps and lotions that make your skin whiter here) and imitating western culture... I think they love the American paradigms and ideals, the idea that you can have whatever you want, you just have to work for it. So far the trip has been nothing but wonderful, I was able to see my friends in Hawaii, my buddy Kristie in Guam and Caitlin in Kagoshima. It's great here, everyone is nice and many more people speak English then I thought. It is, however, the most expensive place I've been. A nice lunch of Pho or Teriyaki that in the states would be $10 is about $40 here, it's just insane. And all the portions are smaller. At the grocery store the largest unit of milk they sell is a liter (3.78 liters in a gallon), and it's about $3 per liter. All the food we buy in the states they have here, but in much smaller portions and much more expensive. They sell pound bags of potatoes that are $6, snicker bars are about $2, everything is just much more expensive. The landscape is beautiful, it reminds me a lot of Costa Rica- at least here in Southern Japan. I'll be heading up north this weekend; hitting hopefully Fukuoka, Nagoya, Hiroshima, then Kyoto and finally Tokyo. Looking forward to taking in all I can of Japan.

Stephanie and Kyle - Calvary Christian - Jan 7th, 2012

I met Stephanie years ago when I started doing charity work for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, her and Kyle are both amazing people. Kyle and Stephanie met at Mars Hill Church in Ballard. Stephanie volunteers in the church nursery where she looked after Kyle's nephew (not knowing Kyle at the time). Kyle's nephew led Stephanie to a friendship with Kyle's sister (the nephew's mom); Kyle's sister then began (unashamedly) trying to set Kyle and Stephanie up. A few hang outs led to a few dates, and a few dates led to dating, engagement and then marriage!

Their story..

It all started off at a local sushi bar in Naples, FL whereStephanie was out with a group of high school girlfriends for dinner. Pete wasalso there with friends and after much encouragement he went up to talk to heron her way to the bathroom. Yes, very romantic. Pete can still remember whatshe was wearing that night and knew that he had met someone special andcouldn’t wait to see her again. The relationship started out very slow, therebeing a six year age difference, and Stephanie still in high school, her parentswere not Pete’s biggest fans. Although, over time, Pete’s determination and wittycharm won over the hearts of Stephanie and her family. After four years of dating, they were readyfor a change and moved to Chicago where Stephanie studies at DePaul Universityand Pete owns a real estate brokerage.

On a foggy summer afternoon Pete took Stephanie for a picnicto their favorite place in the city down by the lake where you can see theentire city skyline. Unbeknown to Stephanie, Pete was planning to propose. Hehad hired a pilot to fly overhead with a banner on the back on the plane saying,“Steph, will you marry me? -Pete.” The entire day Pete was so nervous andChicago’s weather was predictably unpredictable. The fog was so bad you couldn’t see someonestanding 10 feet in front of you, so how would she see the banner in the air?But as the picnic went on, the fog began to lift and just in time the planecame into view and Pete got down on one knee! It was so romantic and shocking!

After dating for six and a half years, it was time to tiethe knot. We couldn’t of been more excited for our wedding day. All of thepreparations and planning were finally going to pay off. When planning thewedding we didn’t have a theme, I just knew I wanted lots of white flowers andtons of candles. I wanted it to feel romantic and full of life. My husband wasso nervous about standing in front of so many people, so to calm his nerves weopted for an evening ceremony under the stars, which gave it an even moreintimate feel. With the lights shinning on us, he couldn’t even see our familyand friends watching and it made it feel like it was just us there. We alsochose my husband’s father to marry us, which made a very special ceremony. Thereception had an elegant vibe, with white table linens and silver candleholders and centerpieces with hydrangeas and roses. The large crystal chandeliers shimmered inthe candle lit room. It was the magical fairy tale that I had envisioned. The music pumped through the lively room andthe guests danced the night away on the dance floor. The first dance was toBrad Paisley’s song, “Then”. The special moment that we both won’t forget wasseeing each other for the first time. Weopted for the nontraditional way and saw each other before the ceremony. It wasjust us and our amazing photographer to capture the magical moment. We got toactually take it all in and enjoy the moment of seeing each other prepared tobecome husband and wife. Another special touch that made our night perfect wasthe photo booth we rented. Our guests got to take silly photos of themselvesand then they added the photos to our guest book. and wrote something to usalong side the photos. It is something that we can look at and laugh for yearsand years. The funny faces will never get old. The night was everything we hadhoped for and more. It was perfect and it was our night. We got to celebratewith our family and friends as we became husband and wife. It was such anamazing night!

Tara and Justin - Wedding at the Arctic Club Seattle

It was an honor and privilege to shoot Tara and Justin's wedding on October 15, 2011 in Seattle. I love all of my clients, but they are extra special because Tara and I went to high school together. Their wedding was held in the gorgeous Northern Lights Dome Room at Seattle's Arctic Club. This is one of the most beautiful indoor venues that I have seen! The wedding was beautifully designed from the orange calla lilies to the cute "I do" message on the bottom of the bride's shoes.

Tara and Justin also ventured out to my favorite lighthouse and beach in Seattle with perfect fall colors.

Thank you Tara and Justin for allowing me to be a part of your special day. I wish you a lifetime of wedded bliss!

Hadley and Dale's wedding was set in beautiful southeastern Washington at Cave B Winery http://www.sagecliffe.com/home.htm The ceremony took place near a cliff overlooking the gorgeous Columbia Gorge. The weather was perfect for the event and the night was topped off with a phenomenal sunset full of deep purples. Cave B's vineyards are beautiful and I had so much fun exploring them with Hadley and Dale. Thank you so much for letting me be a part of your special day!

2010 Review..

When deciding which direction to go in the future, I look to the path that got me to where I am.. This post is a compressed version of my events and travels throughout 2010..
It was quite a year... I feel obligated to say something about Heather when posting this because she was such a big part of my year... But this isn't about her - it's about growth, about losing a best friend, graduating college, meeting two great boys, flying a plane over San Francisco, learning what's really important (thanks Lauren) moving to Florida and back.. this inane description barely scratches the surface of a story-too sacred and profane for this outlet, but perhaps someday I'll write more. For now, enjoy the pics..

I shot all of these images in 2010... each image a small window into a much larger story, just a quick reflection of the many life changing events. Locations include: Qatar, Seychelles, Bora Bora, Cancun, Chicago, Aruba, Salt Lake City, Arizona, Pennsylvania, New Orleans, San Francisco, Vegas, and of course all over Florida.
